Foreshore designated as world-class bird site

LOWER MAINLAND - The Lower Mainland's marine foreshore has received a
prestigious international designation for its importance as a critical
feeding site for migratory shorebirds such as the western sandpiper.

Its recognition under the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network is
the first such designation for B.C., following similar designations at other
world-class bird sites such as the Bay of Fundy on Canada's East Coast.

The designation is expected to put pressure on developments such as the
Delta Port to minimize their impact on shorebirds.

The designation includes the following intertidal marine foreshore areas:
Semiahmoo Bay in White Rock; Mud Bay in Surrey; Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank,
Westham Island, and South Arm Marshes in south Delta; and Sturgeon Bank in
Richmond.
