Subject: [Tweeters] One more question...this time about house finches

We had orange this summer and yellow in past years. We have only red at this time. Our Audubon Field Guide to North American Birds, Western Region states, "Immature males less highly colored, often orangish or yellowish on head and breast." It would be interesting to watch next spring to see if there is any color other than red during the mating season and if any variants appear when the young fledge.

Subject: [Tweeters] One more question...this time about house finches

In my recent report I mentioned having all three colors of house finch at my feeder. I saw in my ID book that this is suppoised to be due to difference in diet. Can anyone give further details on this? What would they be eating that would cause the different colors? How common is it to see Red, Orange, and Yellow variants in one area? Etc...

Thanks,
