Day Trip up Whidbey Island, south to north

Weather: Until mid-afternoon, very sunny, beautiful day. Temps in
mid-50's all day. Afternoon turned overcast and breezy. Felt like a front
moving in. The water sparkled.

Species Seen:

11 Great Blue Heron
50 American Wigeon
17 Mallard
3 Northern Pintail
20 Northern Shoveler
16 Greater Scaup
40 Lesser Scaup

32 Barrow's Goldeneye
21 Bufflehead
6 Hooded Merganser
12 Common Merganser
2 Bald Eagle
4 Northern Harrier
2 American Coot
5 Black Oystercatcher
3 Greater Yellowlegs
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
2 Belted Kingfisher
10 American Robin
2 Black-capped Chickadee
4 Red-winged Blackbird
100 Brewer's Blackbird

Interesting observations on the day:

1) Watched two of the Loons doing their heads laying back on their
backs behavior. Both in unison would lay their heads back in sort of roundy
way.
2) Watched large flock of Surf Scoters moving from one spot to
another in long single line. They would all line up single-file and follow
along. Then they all dove moving down the line like doing the wave at a
football game. When they decided to move back whence they came, they again
formed up in a long single line. Approx 100 of them all acting in concert.
This at Grasser's Lagoon. Watched from hillside (Madrona Road heading
north).
