I would not expect to see martin fledglings here until late July and August;
many are still building nests, and some are probably on eggs. Browns Point
is not too far from Hylebos Waterway and Ruston Way, so the martins Carol
saw could possibly be nesting at one of those sites. The literature mentions
that martins may forage five miles from the nest. On the other hand, Carol
mentioned that they landed in tall trees; if they landed in foliage, there's
a likelihood that they were gathering nesting material. I've never seen a
martin land in foliage except to rip leaves for a nest. I often see them
using willow, madrona, and cherry leaves. The subadult males can be a
challenge to differentiate from females, and are capable of breeding after
their first year.
Carol, thanks for the post!
