Hi Tweets:
Kathy Andrich and I went to the Boeing Ponds tonight (Tue evening) about 7pm
in search of shorebirds. While at the ponds we met John Brew. He works
near there, and is also on Tweeters. These ponds are in the north part of
Kent. Take S 212th St to 59 Pl, turn north and the ponds are north of
Boeing.
There is quite a lot of mud showing now. This evening the weather turned
cloudy and it drizzled a bit, but the birding picked up after we waited
awhile.
We saw at least 12 adult Spotted Sandpipers, and 4 young Spotties (in the
back pond by the Boeing Plant). These young birds were little fluffy balls
about 3 inches long. All four babies could walk, and bobbed their tails up
and down, just like their parent. Really cute.
A flock of 3 larger shorebirds and a moderate number of smaller ones kept
circling around, acting skittish. The 3 larger were Greater Yellowlegs.
They never landed. Eventually the smaller shorebirds landed in the back
pond, and also on the extensive mud flats that are near the blocked-off road
at the north of the ponds. There were about 30 Least Sandpipers, and 6
Western Sandpipers.
We also saw an adult Green Heron, and about 10 Killdeer.
Yours, Carol Schulz
