What is the clutch size of the Black-backed Woodpecker? I did a quick
search and found "One clutch per season ranging in size from 2-6 (Bent
1939), but commonly 3-4 (Short 1982)."
(http://www.prbo.org/calpif/htmldocs/species/conifer/bbwoacct.html) I
only heard a single chick. Perhaps the bird was abandoned because it
was endangering the rest of the fledglings by not yet being able to
leave the nest. The parents left with the other 2-3 birds and the
site wasn't abandoned because of human (or dog) interference at all.
Just a theory.
