I believe these are called swallow bugs, and they can have a big impact (i.e. negative) on nestling survival.

I highly recommend "Swallow Summer" by Charles Brown. He has been studying cliff swallows for almost 20 years in Nebraska, and this is an account of one of his field seasons.
