I'm guessing you're right - birds with various mixes are pretty common,
even out here in the winter. Ocean Shores, where flickers abound in the
winter, is a good place to look for birds of mixed parentage, including
some that look like pure yellow-shafted. But Spearfish Canyon, SD is a
classic place to find hybrids of various eastern/western species. We
saw a Rose-breasted/Black-headed Grosbeak there once - really a striking
bird - maybe "Orange-breasted Grosbeak" would describe it best. They
get Bullock's/Baltimore Orioles, Indigo/Lazuli Buntings, etc.
Interesting area to bird, that's for sure.

MUSTACHE AND YELLOW UNDERWING/UNDERTAIL-I THOUGHT SURELY THIS IS A
HYBRID.MY COMPANIONS WERE NOT CONVINCED.WHO'S RIGHT?
