Starting yesterday there has been a sudden increase in chickadees at my feeder, a dozen or more (mostly Chestnut-backed, with a few Black-capped); only a couple have been around the past two weeks and none at all during June. A couple of the Chessies are quite young, still being fed by a parent; they are noticibly smaller than the others. I watched a little one quiver and cry until the adult stuffed part of a sunflower kernel in its mouth!

I also saw a Dark-eyed Junco gleaning seed from the ground yesterday. Black-headed Grosbeaks are still around, with their fledged young, so it isn't quite the winter birding scene at the feeders yet.
