Doris Erickson and I birded at Fort Lewis for a couple hours last night and ended up with a list of 42 species, among them about a dozen Purple Martins, a busy colony of Cliff Swallows, and two juvenile Red-breasted Sapsuckers that had us guessing for about 10 minutes until one of the parents flew in.

Around 9:00 PM, we came out of the heavy tree canopy and onto the flat open prairie, where we had an unobstructed view of the pink sunset reflecting on the snows of Mt. Rainier. Above us, at least six Nighthawks were flying and calling.
