WOW! What a beautiful bird. John Thaw and I drove
down to Gearhart this morning in search of the
Mongolian Plover. We were looking at Stanley Lake
from about an hour, scanning all the Semipalmated
Plovers at the north end, but no Mongolian. I bumped
into Steve Warner at the guardrail on Lewis and Clark
Rd. He suggested we scope the S end of the lake,
where he and others saw it last evening. Walking back
to the SE corner of the church property from the
guardrail area, I met some other birders who came to
the church to tell us it had been in plain sight for
over an hour at the estuary off the end of Wellington
St. John and I had radios but evidently no one else
did. The Necanicum flock got spooked somehow and the
plover vanished. As luck would have it, while I was
walking back to John?s location, John was scoping some
incoming Plovers at the S end of Stanley Lake and
found the bird within minutes of its departure from
the Necanicum estuary. We watched it there (at a
distance of ~ 150-200 yds) for about an hour until
about 11:30am. Beautiful!

The point of all the above words is that this little
fellow can almost be in two places at once (or within
minutes anyway). Don?t give up. You may have to bop
around a bit, but it is seemingly quite happy in the
mud aggressively hunting and eating worms by the sea.
