Tweets - what a fine morning for walking today. It was sunny and cool when
we started, with a touch of ground fog over some of the meadows. There was
hardly a cloud in the sky, as it slowly warmed up. It was pretty birdy too,
which is nice at this time of year.

Highlights:

Virginia Rail Heard near start of boardwalk
SORA Just like last week, at edge of cattails above
weir
Caspian Tern 5 flying north down the river
MOURNING DOVE First of the year, flying NE over East Meadow
Yellow Warbler Several, some singing, males and females
Wilson's Warbler A pair in the apple tree near the first bench
LAZULI BUNTING Male, fairly uncooperative, in Snag Row
Bullock's Oriole 1st year male feeding juvenile east of mansion

Young birds abound, including begging crows, CB Chickadees being fed, etc.,
etc., etc.

American Goldfinch and Common Yellowthroat males were seen doing display
flights.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk looked like it was learning to soar above the
nest east of the Rowing Club.

Yesterday, I found the nest of a Swainson's Thrush only 6 feet away from the
trail. I watched 3 young being fed by an adult. Today we could see young
in the nest, but no adults.

The Pied-billed Grebe nest that we observed the last few weeks is empty.
Presumably the eggs were knocked out of the nest somehow or were eaten, as
there's no chance they hatched in that short a time.

For the day, 58 species (and likely more, as I thought I heard a Warbling
Vireo, and we almost certainly saw more than one species of
black-wing-tipped gull, but we couldn't get a positive ID on any of them).

For the year, 128 species.

OH - and we had an adult RACCOON with 2 young at the RC pond!
