Hi Tweets

Michael was out of town today so I substituted for him. We had a good morning at Marymoor with 9 people along on a nice, warm summer morning. It was very birdy early for the first two plus hours. We started at our regular 6 am time and by 8 we had progressed to "dog central" (the middle area where the dogs have access to the river) and had seen 38 species. The birds of the day were the Sora, still hanging out on the lilly pads just by the weir, Green Heron and Barn Owl. The Sora was in full view most of the time this morning in great light. Over the last two weeks it seems to have been undergoing a plumage change, going more into "winter" plumage. We had a nice flyover by a Green Heron while we were looking at the Sora, and then perched views later out at the lake. We had just gotten to "dog central" when we had a Barn Owl fly over, circle twice and land in one of the near cottonwood trees. As we approached it took off and flew further up the river and out of sight - a most unusual sighting for that late in the day.

Notable birds for the day:
Osprey - the young were at the nest early, but on light poles later
American Goldfinch with young present
Common Yellowthroat with young
Bewick's Wren with young
Vaux's Swift
Belted Kingfisher - male and female
Wood Duck - a gang of five "teenagers"
Warbling Vireo
Wilson's Warbler
Hairy Woodpecker
Bullock's Oriole
Red-eyed Vireo
Purple Finch

All told 56 species for the day.
