Nesting time now, but there are a lot of vultures up and about. Some are
parents hunting for food, some are single birds without mates. Following is
the report for turkey vultures seen during May 2005 in British Columbia,
Washington, and Oregon:

01 -- 1 over the Dike Access Road and 1 at the River S Unit, Ridgefield
NWR; 3 over Nisqually NWR with 1 being harrassed by a crow; 1 near Ocean Shores
02 -- 8 over Crockett's Lake
03 -- 1 circling east of the barns at Nisqually NWR; 2 over Lummi Island
05 -- 2 at Cypress Provincial Park, West Vancouver, B.C.
07 -- 10 flying in a straight line at about 200 feet over the Glacial
Heritage Preserve; 2 at John's River WMA; 1 between Hoquiam and Ocean Shores
08 -- 2 at the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver, B.C.; 1
between Ocean Shores and Hoquiam; 3 at Legacy Marsh, Upper Lantzville,
B.C.; 2 over the Maplewood Conservation Area, North Vancouver, B.C.
09 -- 18 circling over the Teanaway Bridge then gliding to the north
11 -- 15 along Brady Loop Road; 12 near Satsop; 3 at Montesano; 12 at
Tokeland; 3 north of Grayland
12 -- 1 north of Hoquiam
13 -- 1 at Graham; 7 over Moiser Creek, Hood River County, Oregon
14 -- 22 along the Brady Loop Road complex; ? at Swauk Prairie
15 -- ? at McGregor Marsh, north Nanaimo, B.C.
16 -- 2 just off Hwy 104 on the Olympic Peninsula; 2 near Cathlamet; 1 over
Julia Butler Hanson White-tailed Deer Refuge; 21 in one tree in the rain at
Maryhill State Park; 1 at Graham
17 -- 2 over Weir Prairie, Thurston County; 1 at Juanita Bay Park; 12 at
Leadbetter Point; 1 north of Hoquiam
18 -- 2 in McKenna
21 -- 4 over Selah; 5 + 1 imm. bald eagle near Elma; 3 at Vance Creek, Elma
22 -- 6 on Brick Mill Road, EWA. eating a dead calf in the ditch; 4 over
Yakima; turkey vultures were noted at Fish Lake, Waterfront Park, Icicle
Creek, and Boundary Butte during the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest; 7 north
of Duvall; 1 at Island Crossing; 1 over Route 240 near the Yakima Delta; 1
at Monte-Brady Road; 1 over the Satsop River; 1 in Holiday Beach; 1 at
Quilcene; 4 south of Chimicum
24 -- 1 near Montesano; 2 over Hwy 12; 2 near Grays Harbor
25 -- ? at Taneum Canyon
26 -- 1 over Whidbey Island
27 -- 5 in a kettle + 2 west of Riverside State Park; 5 heading north over
6th Avenue downtown Seattle
28 -- 3 soaring above the cliffs opposite Riverside State Park; 2 north of
Hoquiam; 4 at the LeMay dump; 6 over Hwy 8
30 -- ? at Ridgefield NWR River S Unit

Thanks to all who sent sightings. As always, the "?" just means the person
reporting didn't mention a number. Keep watching during the summer for
youngsters as they fledge. They'll be the ones with dark grey heads; i.e.
no red means they are a young of the year. And, if you come across a nest,
let me know; the list of nesting sites is growing every year.
