My wife, Cindy, and I spent a couple of nights at the Indian Lodge in the
Davis Mountains of west Texas a few years ago. From our room, at the top of the
lodge, we watched for hours (from our bed, no less) as nighthawks and bats
swooped through the mass of insects that were attracted by an outdoor light. I
fell asleep dreaming of nighthawks. Added to this amazing sight was the
occasional 'squeak' from the bats or a 'peent' from the nighthawks.

On our way home on that same trip, we followed the winding Salmon River on
our way to Lost Trail Pass and a campground in Montana. At dusk, we were just
south of Gibbonsville, Idaho, when came upon a spectacular gathering of >300
nighthawks, feasting on the flying insects just above the river.

Nighthawks are indeed "magical," and to see them in action is a real treat.
Spectacular!
