Dear Mary and Tweeters,

It is a little far afield from Puget Sound, but there
are still Common Nighthawks in the Upper Skagit
Valley. A good place to see and hear them is the
Concrete Airport. It is best to be there at dusk, any
time from mid-June through July, and usually into
August. However, the numbers are much lower nowadays
than they were even ten years ago. I seldom see more
than two or three at a time. Sometimes these birds lay
their eggs on the barren ground of disused logging
roads above town.

Incidentally, two nighthawks flew over my place near
Lyman on May 31 this year, calling and foraging in the
overcast skies. I discovered later that these were
apparently the first nighthawks I had ever seen during
the month of May in Washington. I knew they normally
arrived in the Skagit Valley in June, but I hadn't
realized that they so seldom turn up the previous
month.
