Among the 60 plus species Carol Ledford and I had
today at Ridgefield NWR, were:

Cowbirds galore! I don?t know if it is just my
imagination, but it seems as though I?m seeing more of
these parasitic nesters than I ever have in the past.

>From the Kiwa Trail we saw four Black Terns (at least
two were seen carrying food). Also seen there while
calling, were both Western Wood-Pewees and Willow
Flycatchers. There were also more than a dozen
Wilson?s Snipe seen from the Trail.

Chicks/fledglings seen today were: Yellow-headed &
Red-winged Blackbirds, Coots, Pied-billed Grebes, and
House Wrens and Mallards. We also heard a good chorus
from Rail & Sora.

Three Redhead drakes were on Long Lake.

Three Blue-winged Teal drakes and one hen were in the
canal that parallels the woodland South of the Kiwa
Trail entrance.

At the railroad crossing East of the entrance bridge,
I had a Red-breasted Sapsucker that flew within 6 feet
of me on its way to a Cottonwood. Bullock?s Orioles
and Black-headed Grosbeaks were also present in good
numbers. Four Belted Kingfishers were together at the
entrance bridge.
