thanks to all who took their best shots at MYSTERIES, the photo gallery of
16 birds seen at wenas last weekend... these birds were mostly
multiply-identified by birders on-site, or not identified by anyone simply
because i was the one shooting, there was no one else around at the time,
and i'm not great at birds (especially LBJs) i've never seen before...

the consensus follows:

bird # 1: western kingbird (all)

bird # 2: western bluebird 4, says phoebe 1

bird # 3: western bluebird female (all)

bird # 4: says phoebe 3, yellow wagtail 2, empidonax (sp) 1, blue-grey
gnatcatcher 1, grey flycatcher 1 - there was even an almost vote for citrine
wagtail, recognizing it would have to be a truly special and
extraordinarily-rare bird at the campground (or, for that matter, for this
entire continent) - this person ended up voting yellow wagtail in the end

bird # 5: calliope hummer, black-chinned hummer, anna's hummer (all
female) 1 each

bird # 6: american kestrel 2, sharp-shinned hawk 1, merlin (1 possible)

bird # 7: western bluebird 2

bird # 8: grey flycatcher 1, western wood-pewee 1

bird # 9: hermit thrust 4, veery 4 (and two voters chose both :)

bird #10: cassin's finch male 3, purple finch male 1, pine grosbeak 1,
redpoll 1

bird #11: brown-headed cowbird (only 1 person came out and picked a bird.
everyone else hemmed and hawed in a cute fashion :)

bird #12: empidonax (sp) 4, hammond's fly 2, western wood-pewee 2, dusky
fly 1, alder fly 1

bird #13: olive-sided fly 3, empidonax (sp) 2, western wood-pewee 2

bird #14: cassin's finch female 1, rose-breasted grosbeak 1, purple finch
female 1, pine siskin 1

bird #15: pine siskin 2, western wood-pewee 2, empidonax (sp) 2, hammond's
fly 1

bird #16: empidonax (sp) 2, western wood-pewee 2, hammond's fly 1, dusky
fly 1

out of 16 birds, only 3 garnered unanimous decisions (excluding the
cowbird)... even with a photo (some admittedly better than others), there
were varying degrees of interpretation for almost every bird, especially
those in empidonax... so, for what it's worth, most of these birds are
still a mystery to me, though i greatly appreciate the help of everyone who
has taken this "test", and i invite more debate on those that are obviously
"difficult" to determine... for the unanimous guys, i'll be removing them
from "Who is That" in the next day or four... the others, i'll try to
identify with the above captions (and any additional information) as time
permits during the next month...

special thanx to harry thomas, who not only voted, but taught me quite a bit
about the rationale re his and his brother's choices...

for those that haven't voted, or you did vote but would like to check the
"consensus" against your theory, all photos are in the "Who is That?"
