I've had about 30 Red Crossbills at my feeders for the past 6 to 8 weeks. I
have observed that they are a "mix" of bill crossings - some with the bill
tips going to the right and some going to the left. I've also heard them
calling at night (quite loudly - or so it seems to me -at 3 a.m.) high in the
trees. They seem to enjoy the thistle sock the most. The colors vary widely from
bright red to dull orange and bright yellow to dull gold and several are
just a mud brown. Interesting birds!
