this afternoon, a friend and i birded TOS at LBP (some day, if someone knows
why the name was changed, i'd love to hear the story)...

we went exclusively for the purple martins reported lately, but could not
bring back conclusive evidence. we both saw what we thought COULD be from
time to time, but usually lost them from sight before we could be sure; the
only photos (perched birds) and inhabited gourd noticed was the leftmost,
closest to the end of the concrete pier, tree swallows all...

that's not to say the afternoon was a blown opportunity... interesting
sightings included numerous great blue herons (good photos available of
in-flight birds), a green heron that may have been on-nest when a massive
immature bald eagle was heard and seen harrassing, and the married pair of
ruddy ducks in full plumage AND hiphop bobbing-head attitude... other
(mostly adult) eagles seen as they crossed the upper bay area in various
directions... the injured/deformed DCCO was not among the birds spotted
today...

will have the shots of the ruddys (and perhaps still one more GBHE on the
wing) on the website by tuesday...

and it was only yesterday morning i had complained to carol schulz about the
lack of green herons this year, and here 36 hours later i've managed to
flush four in three locations with nary a photo to show for the effort...
