On Saturday, June 11th, I participated in a Friends of the Gorge visit to
the Steigerwald Lake Refuge near Washougal In Clark County. Our best
birds there were a female LESSER SCAUP and a EASTERN KINGBIRD, both of
which were sen just past the barns along the dike.
On Sunday I birded alone and found that the two GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE are still at Rock Creek Cove in Stevenson, Skamania
County. I think that these birds are now "residents" and are hanging out
with the domestic geese there.
I found one ACORN WOODPECKER just below Glenn Wood's church
turned house eon Balch Rd. in Klickitat County. There appears to be a
nest in a pine snag about two hundred feet east of Balch Road. The
suspected nest tree is along the fence line South of the "Marshall Ham"
house, which is the house just South of the "Old Church". Glenn says that
he sees up to four woodpeckers at a time in these trees. There were no
sign of birds at the granary tree on Old Highway 8, but a stiff wind made
observation difficult.
At the mouth of the Klickitat River four CASPIAN TERNS were
sharing the sandbar with the sailboarders.
