Since there have been several recent posts containing information on
Purple Martins, thought perhaps now would be a good time to let all
martin watchers out there know that many martins in WA and BC have been
banded in recent years, most with coded color bands that can often
times be read with a scope when the birds are perched. Color codes
are four digit alpha-numerals (letter-number-number-number, or
number-number-number-letter). So if you see a martin with a leg band,
note color of band and which leg, and try to read the alpha-numeral
if possible. The opposite leg will have a smaller aluminum federal
band which generally cannot be read unless you have the bird in hand.
Even if you cannot read the band, I would appreciate hearing about
any banded martin sightings, especially in areas where martins are
associating with natural cavities.

Thanks.
