I was out just before dawn this morning with the hopes of finding a Common Nighthawk in my usual haunt of the foothills north of Elma. I stopped the car just before the end of the pavement on Newman Creek Rd. and was greeted with the call of two Nighthawks from above. This spot has been a sure bet for nighthawks in the past couple years. I then drove up the A-2300 line with Mountain Quail in mind. While waiting for daybreak, I thought I could hear some chattering quail nearby. However, I wasn't sure so I decided to make a loop trip to the A-2800. Just as I was heading down the A-line from the 2300, I saw a quail run across the road in front of me. It was too fast to get a ID, but this is the same area where I see Mountain Quail quite often. I also had a Ring-necked Pheasant calling from one of the clearcuts which just seems out of place for me.
