Today several people noticed a very new fledgling at Black River today. The bird appeared to be younger than we are accustomed to seeing, with slightly more down and perhaps less alertness or fear that most of them exhibit. Of course we have no way of knowing if this young bird was forced from his nest but had just enough strength (and luck) to land on a relatively safe perch -- a partially submerged log in the pond.

Several of us were concerned for this bird and one wondered if the parents of smaller birds -- sparrows and such, would give more attention (such as continued feeding and watching) than herons seem to.

If you'd like to see photos of this bird, let me know. They may tell more of the story.
