Hi all.
Sorry this is a little remiss, I've not had access to the computer for
several days. On Tuesday evening I discovered a breeding colony of
Tri-colored Blackbirds on Dry Falls lake. This is the lake that you overlook
at Dry falls overlook in Grant County, however you need to access the lake
through the backside of Sun Lake state park following the signs.
I was able to get pictures and video of males feeding with my digital camera
through the scope. I hope to have them up on the web soon (we shall see).
Despite my best efforts I was able to get great looks at several females yet
none allowed for photos or video. I saw at least 3 different fledglings
being fed and would estimate the colony to be 50-60 birds (could be more).
There are also a good number of red-wings in the area, I especially enjoying
viewing comparisons of the females. Good views can be had of these birds,
especially through the scope, but even with bins. I returned yesterday
evening to try for female photos but no luck, though the birds were still
easy to see.
If you go looking be careful on the road, while it is passable for passenger
cars it is a bit rough and rocky so slow and cautious would be good. As I'm
currently working from coulee city I'll keep checking on the progress of the
colony when I can and report. Again I'll try to have the pictures and video
up this weekend if I can find the time.
