We tried this weekend to find the pelican reported in Oak Harbor Bay but
came up empty. The bay did have: Common Loon, White-winged Scoter,
Ring-billed Gull, Glaucous-winged Gull, Pigeon Guillemot. A female Hooded
Merganser was in Penn Cove near Grasser's Lagoon.
My wife and I were having lunch at a restaurant on Goldie Road ( north
Oak Harbor) on Saturday afternoon when we spied a Cooper's Hawk flying by
with a group of starlings right behind. Soon a couple of Turkey Vultures
appeared soaring over the area across the street. A farmer related to me
that he's been seeing vultures regularly at his place on North Whidbey, a
1st for him. Could they be nesting here? It's pretty late in the year to be
migrating.
