Some days you can't buy a decent look at a Swainson's Thrush. This afternoon
within a mile I observed two bold individuals exposed in the open. First was
a singing bird at the tip of an outermost branch near the top of the tallest
maple that "towered" 15 feet above the surrounding clearcut, with the
nearest cover at least 100 feet away. It called and sang enthusiastically
for several minutes until a passing car flushed it. Second was a thrush
eyeing bugs on the ground from a vantage point atop a small slag pile in the
middle of field, with the nearest cover at least 50 feet away. Kinda
reminded me of a bluebird. So I guess that makes it a good day.
