Subject: [Tweeters] Ravens and crows join forces

Yesterday was my last field day of the school year and the lords of the sky
did not disappont us. First 3 ravens showed up at our wetlands site, which
is a very unusual bird. Their presence was loudly objected to by 4 crows,
who yelled and swooped and chased. It was very difficult to figure out if
either species was particularly winning advantage as the Ravens would yell
and dive at Crows, who would return the favor. The song and dance continued
for several minutes while we waited for our bus, then all went quiet and we
resumed packing up from the days activities. Then all heck broke loose as
all the Ravens and Crows appeared to join forces to mob a large Red-tail
hawk. The hawk wove a tight swerving flight through the gauntlet of corvids
and we could hear their calls as they chased that raptor far out of view.
Just as the students were getting on the bus I looked up and a single raven
soared in a circle overhead, a final farewell to a school year well spent.
