Jon,

I witnessed a Barred Owl make an unsuccessful pass at a Western
Screech-owl that I had called in several years ago on Bainbridge Island.
I also have several instances of circumstantial evidence that leads me to
believe that my nest box of screech-owls was preyed upon by Barred Owls
after the young screech-owls had fledged. (Barred Owl call, Screech-owls
giving upset calls, young screech-owl feathers on the ground following
day....)

There is no doubt that Barred Owls will prey upon Screech-Owls, or
Northern Saw-whet for that matter. The weekend before last I led a field
trip owling on Bainbridge, and the group witnessed a Barred Owl fly into a
cedar tree at the approximate location from which a Northern Saw-whet was
calling from. The Saw-whet must have seen the Barred coming, because he
ducked out and flew across the street, only to resume tooting...
