I got to spend this past beautiful weekend at Birch Bay, birding Blaine to Bellingham on Saturday 2/26/05, and Blaine to Seattle on Sunday 2/27/05. I finished with a nice 90 species list. Highlights were:

1000 Pintail in the fog along the shore of Blaine Marine Park (2/26)

12 Harlequin Ducks in Drayton Harbor off Semiahmoo Spit ("Spit") (2/26)

A loudly singing Western Meadowlark at the north parking lot, Spit (2/26)

26 Black Turnstones at 30-50 ft, Spit (2/26)

48 Red-breasted Mergansers thrashing about just feet off the Spit chasing small fish (2/26)

A Northern Shrike hunting near Lake Terrell at the pond near the corner of Rainbow Rd and Mountain View Rd (2/26)

A Rough-legged Hawk on the ground with 44 swans at the corner of Kwina Rd and Hilaire Rd in the Lummi Flats (2/26)

20 Long-tailed Ducks in Drayton Harbor off the Spit (2/26)

6 up close Thayer's Gulls at the Semiahmoo Resort Ferry Dock (2/26)

750 Pacific Loons off Semiahmoo Resort in Semiahmoo Bay (2/27)

140 Brant off the Spit in Semiahmoo Bay (2/27)

The "tame" Gyrfalcon at the Samish Flats "West 90" (2/27)

An equally "tame" Rough-legged Hawk at 20-30 ft on a post at the West 90 (2/27)

A male Falcated Duck in Alice Bay at the base of Samish Island with a flock of 110 Pintail in the tidal channel closest to the road - no scope needed (2/27). I had just gone to Coburg, OR, to see the Falcated Duck there. I assumed this was the same bird, on its way north. But, I've since learned that the Coburg Falcated Duck is still there. So, there are two Falcated Ducks out there right now.

What a great way to spend a weekend!
