This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare
Bird Alert for Monday, February 28, sponsored in part by the Wild
Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver. The

The REDWING was last seen in Olympia, Washington on February 27.
Also, a male FALCATED DUCK was reported by at least 3 observers on
February 27 on the Samish Flats just south of Samish Island in Skagit
County, WA. For further updates on these birds, please call the

Sightings for Monday, February 28

A GLAUCOUS GULL was along Burns Drive near 96th Street
in Delta, and the GYRFALCON was at the foot of 96th Street.

3 SNOW BUNTINGS, or possibly 2 SNOW BUNTINGS and a female
MCKAY'S BUNTING, were at the end of the Iona Island south jetty in
Richmond.

The Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta had 4 VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOWS, 7 BARN SWALLOWS and a TREE SWALLOW,
as well as a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON.


Sightings for Sunday, February 27

The WILLET was at the base of the Tsawwassen Jetty in Delta.

A GYRFALCON, 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 20
CACKLING GEESE were along 40th Avenue west of Highway 99
in Surrey.

The Reifel Bird Sanctuary had a BARN OWL, a HUTTON'S VIREO, an
AMERICAN BITTERN and 3 TREE SWALLOWS.

A male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at the turf farm on 72nd
Street in Delta.


Sightings for Saturday, February 26

At the Mound Farm along 168th Street south of Highway 10 in
Surrey were a TREE SWALLOW, a TUNDRA SWAN, a BROWN-
HEADED COWBIRD and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, while an
AMERICAN KESTREL was just south of this location,

Two SNOW BUNTINGS were at the end of the Iona south jetty,
and a male RING-NECKED DUCK was in the outer pond. 3 TREE
SWALLOWS were over the sewage ponds.


Sightings for Friday, February 25

A MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE is coming to a feeder at First Avenue
and Alma Street in Vancouver.


Sightings for Thursday, February 24

Flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS could still be found at the Reifel
Bird Sanctuary in Delta along with 3 TREE SWALLOWS, 7 BARN
SWALLOWS, 2 MARBLED GODWITS, 2 HUTTON'S VIREOS, and
a SWAMP SPARROW.


Sightings for Wednesday, February 23

A EURASIAN WIGEON was off the south jetty of Iona Island.


Sightings for Tuesday, February 22

A NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was at the Maplewood Conservation
Area in North Vancouver and another NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL
was along the road up Mount Seymour, between the salt shed
and the radio tower.
