Today I was in the parking lot of our local high school and spotted a very
much alive Brewer's Blackbird stuck in the front bumper. As I contemplated
the difficulties of locating the owner a group of girls happened by. They
knew the owner and were positive that she'd rather have her car disassembled
than be the cause of the bird's death. It was further learned the girl was
away on a field trip.
I was counseling caution when 2 strong lads came up and began prying the
bumper apart ( I know not if they wanted to "Do The Right Thing" or merely
to do the right thing in front of the girls. I guess motives don't
matter.). I was able to reach up and extricate the bird.
A quick examination revealed the BRBL to have come through the ordeal in
fine shape. One of the girl's burst into tears over the beauty of it's
plumage and golden eye. I let her release the bird and it flew away strongly
over the fields.
The bird survived; the girls were ecstatic; the guys were heroes; the
bumper popped back into place. By the way, I scraped a knuckle and received
a dollop of BRBL droppings in my hand.
