Tweets - An absolutely gorgeous day, lots of birds, lots of great looks,
nothing earthshaking.

The big news is that the SAVANNAH SPARROWS are back, in some numbers, and
even singing. But the bigger news for us was just what an enjoyable day it
was to be out birding. It was cold, initially, but sunny. The early
morning ground fog stayed away from the slough, and cleared long before we
were birding the interior. Unfortunately, a bit of a breeze picked up
around 10:30, but it wasn't too bad. And what was great was the light -
birds sparkled today.

Highlights:

Green Heron Great looks along slough, 3-5 birds
R.-breasted Sapsucker Many great looks, 3-4 birds
Downy Woodpecker Lots of drumming, several sightings
Anna's Hummingbird Male SE of bend in boardwalk
Marsh Wren Numbers much increased recently
Northern Shrike East Meadow, still
Y.-rumped Warbler Small groups moving around the park
Savannah Sparrow Around 10 seen, most in East Meadow
Purple Finch Lots of singing, hard to see

Nesting:
Red-tailed Hawk Adult sitting (on eggs?) atop odd-snag nest
Downy Woodpecker Lots of excavating, uncertain if any will become
nests
Rufous Hummingbird Female intently on nest at Rowing Club. On eggs?
American Crow 1 with nest material; 1 visiting possible nest
tree
Bl.-capped Chickadee Lots of excavating
Bushtit We've now found 4 nests abuilding so far
American Robin Possible nest found in Cottonwood Forest

Lots of singing today, including FOX SPARROW, HOUSE FINCH, and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER.

On the 21st, Houston Flores had a HORNED GREBE on the lake, and two
GREEN-WINGED TEAL in the slough. Ollie Oliver had a WESTERN MEADOWLARK in
the East Meadow, and a HAIRY WOODPECKER at the Rowing Club.

For the day, 56 species. For the week so far, 60 species. Hairy Woodpecker
and Savannah Sparrow new for the 2005 list.
