Hi! In regard to the i.d. of the pictured accipiter: One of the responses
mentioned the positioning of the eye on the perched bird. I would like to
refer readers to Kenn Kaufman's "Advanced Birding" (p.55) wherein he says: "
.. . the eye on the head of the Sharp-shinned looks relatively large and
centrally positioned on the face. The eye of Cooper's is actually a bit larger,
but (because of the size of the head) it looks relatively smaller and is set
farther forward on the face." We have had both the Cooper's and the
Sharp-shinned perch on our bird bath and the above descriptions have been very helpful.
Adding our thanks to the photographer: it was a good review of our
accipiters! Good birding!
