These examples are fine but they're always gradual. These lights always come
on before total darkness sets in; otherwise, we'd all be blinded by the
"7-11s" in our neighborhoods on a daily basis.

If you walk from a dark room into a brightly lit bathroom, your eyes slowly
adjust to the change as you approach the light. If you walk into a totally dark
bathroom and turn on the bright light, it will take a while to adjust.
