Just to second Dr. Paulson's note regarding The Dry Tortugas. In 2003 I
took Larry Manfredi's 4-day South Florida tour and his 3-day Dry Tortugas
tour. I have been birding over 20 years, including 5 trips to Texas and 4 to
Arizona, and still added 30 ABA birds to my life list. Larry is great (the
usual disclaimers apply).
There is an economical alternative to getting to Garden Key (ie. Ft.
Jefferson) but you don't see the other keys with their great birds. There is a
daily ferry from Key West to Garden Key. You can go out and come back the
same day, or go out and camp a day or two (or more).
Good birding, Mike
