The highlight of a scouting trip to Yakima Canyon and the Wenas area
yesterday was a pair of White-headed Woodpeckers at the Wenas Campground.
When you cross the small bridge after turning left into the campground, go
past the first left turn. The birds were in the Ponderosa Pines about 250yds
further up the road on your left hand side.

Other birds of interest include:

Townsend's Solitaire (2, displaying, Wenas Campground)
White-breasted Nuthatch (2, displaying, Wenas Campground)
Dusky Flycatcher (1, Wenas Campground)
Lewis's Woodpecker (2, displaying, Ellensburg Pass)
Cassin's Finch (1, Ellensburg Pass)
Brewer's Sparrow (3 along Umtanum Rd)
Chipping Sparrow (a few along Wenas Rd)
Western Kingbird (5 along Wenas Rd)

As part of Mike's (and Vicky's) upcoming Seattle Audubon field trip next
weekend, we surveyed Umtanum Creek in Yakima Canyon. We failed to get
Yellow-breasted Chat and Lazuli Bunting, but feel confident that they will
be arriving by next weekend's trip.

Nashville Warbler (~20, singing and calling)
Orange-crowned Warbler (1)
House Wren (~5, singing)
Prairie Falcon (1)
Warbling Vireo (2)
Cassin's Vireo (1)
Bullock's Oriole (1)
Pacific Slope-Flycatcher (1)
Canyon and Rock Wren (several/1)
Lincoln's Sparrow (1)

2 unidentified empids (1 at Yakima Canyon, 1 at Wenas Campground) gave us a
hard time, as they were not calling and the field marks seemed conflicting.
I guess it's that time of the year ...
