April is one of the biggest months for turkey vulture sightings: some are
still migrating, some are already nesting. Following are turkey vultures
reported for April 2005 in British Columbia and Washington:

03 -- 6 north of Sequim
05 -- 1 at Hwy 7; one over Jensen Road; 2 at Sequim; 1 soaring high over
Rattlesnake Lake; 4 north of Arrow Lakes, west of Castlegar, B.C.; 1 at
Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 1 in West Richland; 2 over Abbotsford, B.C.
06 -- 1 over Pitt Bridge, Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 2 over the CP Rail Yard/Poco,
B.C.
07 -- 1 battling the wind in Yakima County
08 -- 5 at Grant Narrows RP, B.C.; 1 in North Langley, B.C.; 5 at Grant
Narrows RP, B.C.; 2 north of Hoquiam
09 -- 5 along I-5 between Nelson Siding Road and Thorp; 1 over Castlegar,
B.C.; 5 over Hamilton Island (Columbia Gorge); 1 over Easton; 1 over Indian
John Rest Area; 1 over the Cle Elum osprey nest (with osprey perched
there); 1 over Easton; 1 adult over Coppei Creek; 20 soaring over the old
prison farm at the Two Rivers WMU
10 -- (?) at the Satus WRA; (?) at the Little Qualicum Estuary, B.C.; 1
soaring out over the rocks at North Head, Long Beach; 1 over Hwy 101 at
Long Beach; 1 hunting near the base of Mt. Spokane
11 -- 1 soaring over Ocosta; 2 on the ground in a corn stubble field near
the Nisqually NWR
12 -- 8 swirling over the Columbia River at Camas; 1 south of Rochester
eating a road-killed possum; 1 in Kitsap County at SR 3
13 -- 2-3 circling east of Littlerock; 7 at the Brady Loop Road complex; 4
south of Nanaimo, B.C.
14 -- 1 over the Wishkah River Valley
15 -- 1 over Pioneer Hwy; 2 over the Chehalis Wetlands; 4 near Lantzville, B.C.
16 -- 2 at Rock Candy Mt. Road; 1 at McCleary; 3 west of Elma; 2 at Satsop;
6 circling over Tacoma; 2 west of McCleary; 1 between Hoquiam and Ocean Shores
17 -- 2 at Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 7 soaring between Snohomish and Monroe; 7
soaring over Balch Road; 2 at Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 1 over Rannie Road, B.C.;
2 over Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 1 circling Lantzville up close
18 -- 1 rising from a dead possum near Enumclaw; (?) over San Juan Island
19 -- 1 at Nisqually NWR; 1 near Mossy Rock; 1 over Pitt Meadows
20 -- 1 at Alder Lake Dam; 1 along Burrows Road off Hwy 109
21 -- 4 at Nisqually NWR; 5 over Alder Lake; 3 over the Rattlesnake Lake area
22 -- 1 west of Elma; 5 at the bridge west of Cle Elum; 1 over the Mt.
Baker highway
23 -- 3 circling over Foulweather Bluff; 1 at Nisqually NWR; 2 soaring over
the horse ponds at Sequim; 1 at Burnaby Mountain Park, B.C.; 1 at Nisqually NWR
24 -- 3 at Nisqually NWR; 2 at Vance Creek Park; 3 at Nisqually NWR; 5 at
the Brady Loop Road complex; 4 southeast of Elma; (?) at Ladysmith Harbour,
B.C.
25 -- 1 over the John Wayne Marina; 1 teetering over I-90 west of West
Nelson Siding Road; 1 over Pitt Meadows, B.C.
26 -- 2 circling low over trees at the I-90/Hwy 202 exit; 3 adults feeding
on road kill near Mt. Hope
28 -- 2 over the twin barns at Nisqually NWR
29 -- 1 over the south fork of the Nooksack north of Acme; 1 along the edge
of the forest at Pitt Meadows, B.C.
30 -- 15 along the Brady Loop Road; 1 over Monroe; 3 over west Goldbar; 2
at Pitt Meadows, B.C.

My apologies for any reports left out. I had some computer malfunctions
last month and may have lost some reports. As always, a (?) means no
numbers were mentioned.

If you come across nests while hiking, I'd like to know about them. They
are pretty hard to find which, of course, is to the vulture's benefit, but
every once in a while I get a new nest report. Thanks for the continued
support; the database is growing!
