I used to live in Los Gatos. If you're interested in typical California birds--California quail, scrub jays, California thrashers, California towhees, etc.--try going a bit west of town on Highway 17. If you get up into the chaparral on the east slopes of the Santa Cruz mountains you should see most or all of these. Sorry I don't have a specific location. I wasn't yet a birder back then...
