Birdhouses fund artist-in-residence program at Stevens Elementary School
Stevens Elementary School has friends in high places. The Capitol Hill
public school had no art teacher and no art program when parent Abby Katzman
organized an artist-in-residence program funded largely by birdhouses.
Katzman's friends make the birdhouses, and artists take it from there. It's
the quality of the artists involved that makes the program unusual.
Birdhouses by Michael Spafford, Elizabeth Sandvig, Roy McMakin (pictured
here), Spike Mafford, Joe Max Emminger, Louis Graham and close to 30 others
will be sold by silent bid.
Saturday night at 7, Miller Community Center, 330 19th Ave. E. Free
admission. Last year the birdhouses raised $9,000 ($3,000 for McMakin's
piece alone.) For more information, contact abbyk at drizzle.com.
