Houston and Tweeters,

It looks to me like your LONG-BILLED CURLEW on San Juan Island
may be a first record for the county.

Long-billed Curlew is not listed for the county in "Birds in Washington
State: a county comparison" (2005 edition, by Ken and Laurie Knittle),
which is the most up-to-date compilation of county lists for
Washington.

Long-billed Curlews are regular, but very rare, migrants through the
Vancouver, BC area and through the Puget Sound area as well.

Congratulations on a good find!

Subject: [Tweeters] San Juan and Lopez Island birding 5-5-05

Hello all,

John Bower and I censused the waters around San Juan and Lopez Island
yesterday as part of John's ongoing marine bird study. Luckily, our schedule
allowed us to take some time to go birding on the islands, and we ended up
with a few highlights.

At American Camp on San Juan Island, we spotted a LONG-BILLED
CURLEW in the grassy fields above the beach. I think this sighting is
extra noteworthy because LBCU is not listed on the annotated checklist
in the Birding in the San Juans book. Does anyone have any up to date
info on the status of this bird on the island?
