Saturday's (5/07/05) Spokane Audubon field trip
yielded some interesting species and tallied some 102
species for the day. This trip was led by veteran
birder Warren Hall who has run this trip for many
years.

In Spokane County - Granite Lake held EARED GREBES and
the north end of Silver Lake had a RED-NECKED GREBE.

In Lincoln County - Reardan hosted LEAST SANDPIPER,
LONG-BILLED CURLEWs, and WILSON'S PHALAROPEs.

The Davenport Cemetery was loaded with HAMMOND'S
FLYCATCHERs. A few ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, NASHVILLE
WARBLER, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, RC KINGLETS,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs, WESTERN KINGBIRD, SAY'S
PHOEBE, and an unexpected ROCK WREN were present too.

The best birds of the day were located on North
Telford Road (north of the HWY 2 Creston Rest Area).
LEWIS' WOODPECKER-2, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD-2, CASSIN'S
VIREO, GRAY FLYCATCHERs - many, DUSKY FLYCATCHER, and
FERRUGINOUS HAWK - 2 (dark phased adult and a light
phased immature) were some of the pleasant
discoveries. A CASSIN'S FINCH and a TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE demostrated their musical display flights to
us.

In Northrup Canyon - Grant County, birds were rather
quiet, but several LAZULI BUNTINGs, YELLOW WARBLER,
CHIPPING SPARROW, HOUSE WREN, sang to us under the
early afternoon sunshine. A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD,
WARBLING VIREO, and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were
present but quiet. GOLDEN EAGLES were constantly
patrolling the cliffs and a kettle of Turkey Vultures
made an appearance too.

On the trail, A pair of buzzing No. PACIFIC
RATTLESNAKEs riveted our attention to the ground.
Everyone was able to safely enjoy seeing these
marvelous critters as they moved to the cover of
sagebrush.

As we headed south of the entrance of Northrup, we saw
a WILD TURKEY flying along the bench to the east. A
couple of CASPIAN TERNs were quartering Bank's Lake
and one CLARK'S GREBE was on Osborn Bay.

It was lovely spring day to be out birding.
