Folks,
My 80+yo parents live in a senior manuf-home community in Marysville north
of Seattle. Their home borders a greenbelt. They have been yard bird
watchers for years, and hoped to attract Pileated Woodpeckers to a suet
block feeder along with Downies, flickers, jays and Chestnut-backed
Chickadees. Based on success they had with feeding Pileateds when they
lived in east TN, Dad finally went to a livestock slaughter house near
Marysville and got chunks of beef kidney fat to hang in a net bag. No
Pileated Woodpeckers have shown up yet, but now crows, along with the
usual smaller birds, like the kidney fat. A new and unexpected guest was
recently seen chowing on the fat, not chasing the small birds, but
actually eating the fat...an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk!
