Re: Hummer Friends,
"I don't use a brush. I use uncooked rice in water and it acts as an
abrasive and is harmless to the birds. A brush may carry the germs if you don't
bleach it also."

Nancy,
Thank you for the Rice tip today. It worked beautifully. At first I thought
"No way" will that work all the scum was really starting to build up (felt
guilty for waiting so long) but I was so surprised how quickly and sparkling
clean the feeder looked after I was finished shaking it up. I added about
1/4-1/2 full of rice mixed with water in the feeder and shook it vigorously for a
handful of times and it dump it out and rinse really well. That was it, no
brush or anything. Not to mention how cheap it is to get a bag of rice. My only
concern was to rinse extremely well after finished because of the starch in
the rice didn't want any of that to create problems. A fantastic idea I will
be sure to share with friends and encourage other hummer friends to do as
well. Thanks again.
