Hello All,
Yesterday, 14 May 2005 John Gatchet and I did or performed a Wahkiakum Co.
Big Day. We started at the County Line Park and then proceeded to zig-zag
back and forth across this small county. The weather was overcast with local
showers off and on all day. We ended up meeting some of the more interesting
folks that inhabit this forested part of Washington State We started at 6:30
A.M. and finished at 10:15 P.M.. We had great day! John ended up with 7 new
county birds and I with 43 new county birds! Our grand total for the day was
121 species! Birds of note are as follows:

Cacking Goose.....1 bird
Blue Grouse......located at three different sites
Ring-necked Pheasent......saw and heard 4 different birds
California Quail.......heard one calling bird
Ruffed Grouse.......saw one red morph bird
Whimbrel........6 birds
White-tailed Kite......saw one bird
Coopers Hawk......saw one bird
Sharp-shinned Hawk.....saw one bird
Barn Owl.........1 bird
Barred Owl.......1 bird
Northern Pygmy Owl......1 bird
Am. Dipper.........two adults and a recently fledged young bird.
Western Kingbird..........1 bird
Townsends Solitaire.......1 bird
Hermit Warbler.......4+ birds at three different sites
Yellow-breasted Chat.....1 bird
Bullocks Oriole........1 bird

These are the highlights of the day. We also chanced into Alan Richards and
Ann Musche which only added to the many fun events of this day. Great county
to bird. One note of interest, at Cathlamet we came across a Northern
Allagator Lizard about 7 inches long. I had no idea this reptile was in this
county!
Later Mike
