Subject: [Tweeters] Lady of Spain Bird?

Hi folks

This goes way back to the early 1970's in S California, hiking up to Mt.
San Jacinto (the peak you can reach by tram from Chino near Palm Springs,
but we hiked up the west side.) I wasn't a birder then but we heard
constant call of what we called the "Lady of Spain" bird. Four whistled
notes, exactly matching the first four notes of the song "Lady of Spain."
Thinking back it sounded like the clear notes a chickadee makes, but I've
never heard a BCCH sound those four tones. This was in April or May, I
think. Any ideas?

Oh, one other thing, kinda funny. I have a pic of a Gray Jay here:

I got a guestbook entry that said "kookaburra. Jay does not have such a
heavy beak, and color is also wrong for all kinds of jays " I could be
wrong about it being a Gray Jay, but I seriously doubt we'd see a
Kookaburra halfway to Paradise on Mt. Rainier.
