This month's (May '05) Mechanical Engineering magazine has an interesting article on p. 72, by Gayle Ehrenman, about a breathalyzer that has been developed to help biologist analyze the breath of migrating songbirds for clues as to what they ate earlier in the day.

Kent Hatch is an associate professor of integrative biology at BYU and is the developer of the "bird breathalyzer." The article goes on to say that researchers know what the birds eat while wintering in Central America, and what they eat in their summer locations, but not what they eat during migration. If they can identify their preferred diets during migration, perhaps they can ensure that appropriate stopover habitats are available to the migrating flocks.
