There are currently 2 Northern Mockingbirds at Horn Rapids County Park.

We reported the first one on May 22. At that time, we suspected the second
bird was there as one would sing and one would go into the thick rose bushes.

Since there is a chance that they could breed, we are asking that no one
play tapes. Since at least one bird is singing, there is no need to do
anything but wait. Standing directly in the smaller set of trees tends to
make the birds go quiet. Moving off toward the river along the path and
being patient works quite well. There are a lot of other birds around to
entertain you while you wait. Today the Common Nighthawks were
back. There are quite a few Bullock's Orioles and Black-headed Grosbeaks
and at least one Yellow-breasted Chat. Migrants are slowing down with the
increasing temperatures, but today there were Wilson's Warblers and a
Warbling Vireo.

Directions: From Richland, one would take Rt 240 toward Vernita. The park
is located just past the Horn Rapids Dam. One would turn left toward Benton
City to the park entrance. The birdd have been in the day-use area in the
smaller group of trees (locust and cottonwood). At least one has also
flown into a large thicket of wild rose closer to the river.
