Before I get too far behind on posting trip reports, I
wanted to communicate some recent sightings.

On today's (5/27/05) solo trip to northern Lincoln
County, I saw the BURROWING OWL (Lincoln Co. lifer)
just east of Davenport that Jim Acton recently found.
Due to the precarious position of this species in
Lincoln County, I prefer not to broadcast the specific
site details.

Overlooking the riparian area below Hawk Creek Ranch
Road, I heard YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (2), the low hoots
of BLUE GROUSE (Lincoln Co. lifer), and saw BH
GROSBEAK, BEWICK'S WREN, CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, YELLOW
WARBLER, C. NIGHTHAWK, RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, and W.
WOOD PEWEE. DUSKY FLYCATCHER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBER,
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, CASSIN'S VIREO, CASSIN'S FINCH,
WARBLING VIREO, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, WESTERN
BLUEBIRD, WESTERN & EASTERN KINGBIRD, were all in
evidence in the general area.

In the community of Lincoln, I saw a male
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD (Lincoln Co. lifer) coming
to a feeder in the RV park. The best bird of the day
was probably a vociferous LEAST FLYCATCHER (Lincoln
Co. lifer) that could easily be heard half way a
across the Davenport Cemetery.

Last Saturday (5/21/05), Garrett MacDonald and I
birded Whitman & Adams Counties. Some of the
highlights included:

Steptoe Butte: WILSON'S WARBLER (Whitman Co. lifer),
LAZULI BUNTING, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, BH GROSBEAK,
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE, and BEWICK'S WREN.

Kamiak Butte: DUSKY FLYCATCHER, W. WOOD PEWEE (Whitman
Co. lifer), WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH (Whitman Co.
lifer), WESTERN TANAGER, and HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER.

Rose Creek Preserve: LINCOLN'S SPARROW, MACGILLIVRAY'S
WARBLER (Whitman Co. lifer), RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD -
female (Whitman Co. lifer), and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD.

At high noon, a BARN OWL was flying around downtown
LaCrosse. One LONG-BILLED CURLEW was south of town.

In Adams Co., a LONG-BILLED CURLEW flew over the
highway. In Washtucna - Bassett Park, we saw
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER-2 (Adams Co. lifer), SAYS'S
PHOEBE, and WILSON'S WARBLERs in the locust trees
along the periphery. In the central courtyard area, we
had WARBLING VIREO, WESTERN TANAGER, CASSIN'S VIREO,
and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER (all of which were Adams Co.
lifers).

North of town (in Staley Coulee), there was an
immature, light phased FERRUGINOUS HAWK (Adams Co.
lifer). In Ralston, a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW made for
a nice trip addition. My final Adams Co. lifer of the
day was a GOLDEN EAGLE near Cow Lake. The Golden Eagle
seen as it was being dive bombed by a SWAINSON'S HAWK.
