Birders,

I am forwarding the attached message about Eurasian Collared-Doves,
sent earlier this morning to BIRDCHAT as part of an ongoing discussion
about the current range of this species in North America. Some of you may
be unaware that there is a substantial population in south-central British
Columbia, which became known to local birders only in 2002.

I know there have been quite a number of isolated sightings of Eurasian
Collared-Doves in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. However, are there any
established, breeding populations in any of these 3 states? If not, there
assuredly will be soon!

Birdchatters,

There is a substantial and growing population of Eurasian Collared-Doves
in the Similkameen Valley of southern British Columbia, in and around
the small communities of Cawston and Keremeos (SW of Penticton).
This population apparently resulted from a separate introduction, not by
expansion from the Florida beachhead; they have apparently been there
for more than 20 years.

The Cawston Christmas Bird Count on December 30, 2004 tallied 155
Eurasian Collared-Doves. The first Cawston CBC, on January 4, 2004,
tallied only 23. The population appears to be increasing rapidly, even
though many doves were obviously missed on the first CBC.
